In the afternoon of July 12th, 2021, the semester meeting of the English as Medium of Instruction Department （EMI） of the School of Business of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies was held in 349 of the Faculty Building in the south campus by means of a combination of online and offline. Leadership team of the School of Business, including Zhu Wenzhong, Ding Hao and Xu Yiqing, attended the meeting and gave speeches. Huang Lei, Director of EMI Section, teachers from the Section, two students of the Innovation Class and administrators of Academic Affairs Office also attended the meeting. The meeting was conducted in English and was chaired by Huang Lei.

In his speech, Dean Zhu reviewed the development history and purpose of the EMI Department. He pointed out that the establishment of the department has institutionally promoted the development of all-English instruction of the school. He affirmed the achievements and prospects of innovation classes from the aspects of improving the quality of talent training, enhancing students' identity and good employment prospects, and he said ,he was proud of the remarkable results achieved by the department in recent years as a member of the teachers of the department. Dean Zhu highlighted that School of Business has always adhered to the promotion of in-depth integration of professional teaching and foreign language teaching, with in cooperation with innovation classes and teachers recognized in the field of all-English instruction. Besides, he pointed out that the school would firmly aim to become a high-level business school with distinctive international characteristics, and fulfill the core values of SMILE, and cultivate more students with an international perspective based on the mission of training international high-end business talents. It is hoped that the EMI Department will play a greater role in the process.

Associate Dean Ding first affirmed the far-reaching impact of the establishment of the EMI Department on the development of innovation classes. He said the school will continue to play to the uniqueness and advantages of innovation classes, lay emphasis on the creation of the brand of EMI Department, strengthening the construction of the teaching team and enhancing the overall quality of the students. Associate Dean Xu congratulated on the fruitful achievements of the department, saying that in the future the school will continue to introduce high-quality teachers, increase foreign cooperation projects, establish cooperative relations with more foreign institutions, thus providing a better platform for international teaching.

Dr. Huang Lei conducted a revision of the work for this semester. He concluded that the EMI Section is a typical team-based organization, inseparable from all levels of collaboration and mutual assistance of the school. With the strong support of the leadership team, the close cooperation of the administrative staff and the hard work of all teachers and the participation of students, more instructors are involving in the EMI section and the quality of teaching has been promoted, which has been proven by students’ positive evaluation on the course teaching quality and performance of the mentor system.. He said that in the future, more teachers should be encouraged to apply for the EMI qualifications and offer more English instruction courses. The cohesion of teaching team should be strengthened and management models should be optimized respectively. Students’ satisfaction is the priority of EMI section.

In the teacher-student symposium, teacher representatives and student representatives of innovation classes actively discussed the curriculum, teaching methods and other issues, and the communication between teachers and students was cordial and effective. This semester final meeting of the EMI Section fully reflects the cultural atmosphere of the EMI Section of the School of Business, which helps to enhance the teaching quality of undergraduate programs.
